ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017 schedule announced

ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017 schedule announced

Top four sides from the Super Six stage will progress to the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 which will be staged in the UK from 26 June to 23 July
  • India heads Group A which also includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Thailand; South Africa leads Group B which comprises Pakistan, Bangladesh, Scotland and PNG
  • Holly Colvin says Colombo event presents the sides last opportunity to qualify for the ultimate event in women’s cricket

With 50 days to go for the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017, the ICC has announced the event schedule which brings together 10 sides in their quest to claim four remaining places in the event proper.

The tournament will run from 7-21 February at four Colombo venues and the sides finishing in the top four of the Super Six stage will join defending champion Australia, host England, former winner New Zealand and reigning ICC World Twenty20 champion West Indies in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 from 26 June to 23 July.

Asian champions and former World Cup finalists India leads Group A which also includes Sri Lanka, Ireland, Zimbabwe and Thailand, while South Africa heads Group B which comprises Pakistan, Bangladesh, Scotland and Papua New Guinea (PNG).

Each side will play four matches in the first round, following which the top three sides from each group will progress to the Super Six stage, while also carrying forward points they earn against sides which have progressed to the Super Six stage from their group.

The top four sides from the Super Six stage, in which each side will play three matches against teams from the other group, will complete the eight-team line-up for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, while the top two sides will battle out for the title in the 21 February final.

Holly Colvin, ICC’s Women’s Cricket Officer and a World Cup winner with England in 2009, said: “This is an extremely important event on the women’s cricket calendar as it offers a final opportunity to the sides to qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup, which is the ultimate event for any cricketer.

“The top four sides from the Super Six stage will not only qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, but they will also secure places in the next edition of the ICC Women’s Championship. There is incentive for the remaining two sides from the Super Six stage, which will secure ODI status for the next four years. As such, there is plenty to play for in Colombo.

“The ICC World Twenty20 in India and the ICC Women’s Championship have shown that the gap between the top-ranked sides is narrowing. The ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier will create more opportunities for women’s cricketers to compete at the highest level and at the same time prepare for a high profile event like the ICC Women’s World Cup.”

The 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup was an international women's cricket tournament that took place in England from 24 June to 23 July 2017.[1] It was the eleventh edition of the Women's Cricket World Cup, and the third to be held in England (after the 1973 and 1993 tournaments). The 2017 World Cup was the first in which all participating players are fully professional.[2] Eight teams qualified to participate in the tournament. England won the final against India at Lord's on 23 July by 9 runs.[3]

The 2014–16 ICC Women's Championship, featuring the top eight ranked teams in women's cricket, was the first phase of qualifying for the World Cup, with the top four teams qualifying automatically. The remaining four places were decided at the 2017 World Cup Qualifier, a ten-team event that was held in Sri Lanka in February 2017. This featured the bottom four teams from the ICC Women's Championship and six other teams.[4]

The ICC announced a panel of thirteen umpires and three match referees to officiate the tournament, including four female umpires, the highest number yet for an ICC global event.[8] The four female umpires were drawn from the ICC's International Umpires Development Panel and their male colleagues from the International Umpires Panel. Richie Richardson is a member of the Elite Match Referees Panel while Steve Bernard and David Jukes are on the Regional Match Referees Panel. Sue Redfern became the first woman to have played in a Women's Cricket World Cup and then stand in a tournament as an umpire.[9]

Group stage[edit]
On 8 February 2016, it was announced that in the Group Stage, eight sides will participate in a single-league format with each side playing the other once. This format was last used in the 2005 tournament. The top four sides following the conclusion of the league matches will progress to the semi-finals with the winners meeting at Lord's on 23 July. Therefore, a total of 31 matches will be played during the 28-day tournament.[10] The full fixtures for the tournament were announced by the ICC on 8 March 2017, to coincide with International Women's Day.[11] Ahead of the group stage fixtures there were eight practice matches, played between 19 and 22 June 2017.[12]

Teams tied on equal points in the group stage of the tournament were decided by number of wins, followed by net run rate.[13] If both of those were still the same, then the head-to-head match between the two sides was used to determine who progresses to the semi-finals.[13]

New Zealand Women vs Sri Lanka Women, 1st Match

New Zealand Women vs Sri Lanka Women, 1st Match - Live Cricket Score, Commentary

SLW 188/9 (50 Ovs)
NZW 189/1 (37.4 Ovs)
New Zealand Women won by 9 wkts
ust the start New Zealand wanted. A day to remember for Suzie Bates who is now third in the list of most ODI hundreds in Womens cricket. They will be next playing South Africa on Wednesday at the very same venue. Sri Lanka though will hope for a turn of the tide. They gonna face Australia next, on Thursday. But there's plenty of Womens World Cup action before that. Don't miss out. Hope you're having a great weekend. Until next time, cheers!!
Sri Lankan captain Inoka Ranaweera spoke in Sinhalese. Unfortunately, we couldn't transcribe it. Apologies for the same.
Suzie Bates: Really pleased with the way we finished. Didn't start as well as we would have liked. Maybe a few nerves with the ball, but the way we came back was brilliant. Sri Lanka batted well at the start, and we could have done a lot more things well. We are playing South Africa next and we need to be at our best in that game. I did feel a little bit out of touch before this game, but it's nice to spend some time in the middle and contribute for the team.
Holly Huddleston, player of the Match: It's a dream come true for me. You always want to do well in the first game. I just kept it simple, bowl decent line and length. I got a little bit of movement in the air first up and after that it was a pretty decent batting strip. Satterthwaite and Bates, to bat like that was awesome. My parents coming here to watch the game is pretty special.
16:34 local: Handshakes all around as Suzie Bates beams in delight. New Zealand continue to have the edge over Sri Lanka. After losing 8 wickets for 40-odd runs in the last 15 overs, Sri Lanka had very little chance of making a comeback in this game. That little chance was to pick up early wickets and primarily the wicket of Suzie Bates. They did get the early wicket, that of Rachel Priest, but that remained to be the only joy with the ball for Sri Lanka. Bates and Satterthwaite bullied the bowlers and milked runs with supreme ease. Made a mockery of the target and will be mighty pleased with the net run rate, I'm sure.
